Many people associate the internet with being able to source products, such as electronics, or services, such as VoIP Providers at the cheapest price. We have become obsessed with our price comparison sites and we often miss out on some of the real gems that are available on the internet.
In fact, the internet offers us a wealth of choice when it comes to shopping and there are some great sites – not necessarily the cheapest but which provide unique and highly unusually objects around the world, either for our home or for gifts.
You can now easily buy things that you used only to be able to find when you were on holiday such as handicrafts made by indigenous tribes, things that you do not normally associate with the mass production of the internet.
Small businesses can now put their goods online fairly cheaply and easily, bringing them to a far wider audience. You can find crafts made in Peru or Kenya, from small family run firms to co-operatives of underprivileged women. As well as providing us with unique gifts, we are helping these people to carve out a better life for themselves.
One thing to watch out for when buying these handicrafts is to check that they are Fair Trade, so that we know that the people actually making the goods are earning a decent living.
